Keyboard and mouse problems are some of the most frustrating issues I have experienced while using a computer. The same applies to a mouse.
If the device does not work on another computer either, there is a greater possibility that the hardware is damaged.
This simple test can save a lot of time because it helps separate hardware problems from software problems.
Try a Different Keyboard or Mouse
If you have access to another keyboard or mouse, connect it to the computer.
If the second device works correctly, the original device may be defective.
If the second device has exactly the same problem, the computer itself may be responsible.
This method is especially useful when troubleshooting a desktop computer with several USB ports.
Check USB Ports
A faulty USB port can make a working keyboard or mouse appear defective.
Try several different USB ports. If the device works in one port but not another, the problem may be related to that specific port.

Although Windows troubleshooting tools do not solve every problem automatically, they are useful because they can identify common configuration issues.
When Keyboard Keys Are Typing the Wrong Characters
Sometimes the keyboard works, but it types the wrong characters.
This can happen because of an incorrect keyboard layout.
Open Settings, go to Time & language, and check your language and keyboard settings.
Make sure the selected keyboard layout matches the physical keyboard you are using.
You should also check whether Windows has accidentally switched between installed keyboard layouts.
If only a few keys produce unexpected characters, test the keyboard in another application. This helps determine whether the problem affects the entire system or only one program.
When the Mouse Cursor Moves by Itself
A mouse cursor that moves randomly can be caused by a dirty sensor, an unsuitable surface, wireless interference, or a hardware problem.
Clean the sensor underneath the mouse and test it on a different surface.
If you are using a wireless mouse, move the receiver closer to the mouse if possible.
For laptops, remember that the touchpad can also cause unexpected cursor movement. If your palm touches the touchpad while typing, the pointer may move accidentally.
Check your touchpad settings and adjust sensitivity if necessary.
When Both Keyboard and Mouse Stop Working
If both devices suddenly stop working at the same time, I would first suspect a system, USB, power, or driver problem rather than two devices failing simultaneously.
Restart the computer and try different USB ports.
If both devices are connected through the same USB hub, connect them directly to the computer.
If the problem happens after waking the computer from sleep, investigate USB power management and available Windows updates.
You can also test the devices before Windows fully loads. If they work in the BIOS or startup environment but stop working inside Windows, the problem is more likely software related.
